Match Day 17 Preview: Taraba hurdle awaits Sharks

Glo Premier League leaders, Sharks, will face one of the most tricky tests this weekend when they make the long trip to Jalingo to face FC Taraba. And there is the grudge match in Kaduna between defending champions, Kano Pillars and six-time champions, Enyimba.
Eight other matches will also go down on Saturday and Sunday.

FC Taraba vs Sharks
Venue: Jolly Nyame Stadium, Jalingo
Date: 31.05.2014
Time: 4pm

League leaders, Sharks, will be hoping to go 11 matches unbeaten to stay top of the table. But FC Taraba, stand in their way of achieving that feat. FC Taraba have been strong in their last four home games, winning all.

Sharks have shown character in recent weeks to stay at the summit. Christian Pyagbara has been one man in the mix of things for Sharks. But can they continue their superb run when they face FC Taraba?

Giwa FC vs Nembe City
Venue: Rwang Pam Stadium, Jos
Date: 31.05.2014
Time: 4pm

Kadiri Ikhana will take charge of his first home match as Giwa FC coach against bottom-placed Nembe City. Giwa have had a fine run at home, winning four games in Jos on the spin.

Nembe City have struggled on the road taking just a point in seven away matches. It is going to be a tough trip for Nembe City and at the same time will be hoping to continue their battle to fight away from bottom spot.

Dolphins vs Lobi Stars
Venue: Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt
Date: 31.05.2014
Time: 4pm

Last season, Dolphins defeated Lobi 1-0 in this match. Lobi have already made one trip to the Garden City and lost 0-1 to Sharks. This will be their second trip to the same city. The Makurdi-based club have lost all of their seven away matches so far.

Dolphins come into this match after a 1-0 loss at Enyimba in midweek. But they have had a decent run of form at home beating Bayelsa United, Akwa United, Abia Warriors and Warri Wolves. Lobi will have to be at their best if they really want to take a result back to Katsina Ala with them.

Bayelsa United vs Heartland
Venue: Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin
Date: 31.05.2014
Time: 4.15pm

This is going to be an interesting match as 15th-placed Heartland face Bayelsa in 16th position. Both teams are just occupying positions above the bottom four and any loss could mean falling into the last four.

Heartland have never won this game in the premier league era against Bayelsa United and they are yet to score a goal in their four away matches to Bayelsa, who have equally been unconvincing at home in their last five matches. This match will be live on Supersport 9.

Sunshine Stars vs El-Kanemi Warriors
Venue: Akure Stadium, Akure
Date: 01.06.2014
Time: 4pm

After a 2-0 loss to Kaduna United on Thursday, Sunshine Stars will return to Akure with the hope of picking the bits and pieces from that defeat when they host El-Kanemi. Only Enyimba and Sharks have been able to leave Akure with a point each in the on-going season.

In their last four away matches, El-Kanemi have not done well. They have lost at Kano Pillars, Nembe, Nasarawa and Sharks and have scored just one goal in those matches. Can El-Kanemi become the third team to get a point in Akure or even become the first to win a match at Sunshine?

Abia Warriors vs Gombe United
Venue: Umuahia Township Stadium, Umuahia
Date: 01.06.2014
Time: 4pm

Gombe United finally ended their three season's poor away run when they picked a point at Rangers in a 3-3 thriller at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium. They have been scoring goals but have failed to win in their last five matches. This is their first-ever top flight trip to Umuahia with assistant coach Gideon David still in charge of the team since their coach, Maurice Cooreman remains ill.

Warriors have not hidden their ambition of rubbing shoulders with the big boys. They have stunned big teams like city rivals, Enyimba, Sunshine Stars, Bayelsa United and Lobi Stars. Will Gombe United be added to that list of casualties?

Rangers Int'l vs Kaduna United
Venue: Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu
Date: 01.06.2014
Time: 4pm

This is a clash of two teams in the bottom four. It is still early days to say that they are both struggling for survival but their start to the season suggest they are in dire need of wins to calm their fans. Rangers looked dismal in their 2-0 loss at Nasarawa compared to Kaduna United's 2-0 win at home against Sunshine Stars.

As it looks, this match is up for the taking and both teams will look to take their chances in an attempt to climb out of the bottom four.

Akwa United vs Crown FC
Uyo Township Stadium, Uyo
Date: 01.06.2014
Time: 4pm

Uyo will come alive for this match as Akwa United seek to navigate their way back into the top three or four. It has been a disappointing last five league games for Akwa as they have won just one match.

But they host Crown, one of the three teams still without a point in their away matches this season. Crown have struggled in all seven away matches. Will their trip to Uyo yield any favourable result?

Kano Pillars vs Enyimba

Venue: Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna
Date: 01.06.2014
Time: 4.15pm

This is the big game of this weekend. Both are clawing their way up familiar territory and that is the credential that has made them the big boys of the Glo Premier League.Last season, The fixture comes with excitement, bile and close attention from organizers but it has never fallen short of the fireworks looked forward to.Pillars won this match 1-0 thanks to Mannir Ubale's late header and that result ultimately sealed the league title for the Kano-based club.

Though this match is not a title-decider, it is a game in which pride will be at stake. But beyond pride is what the three points mean for both sides- a climb within touching distance of the log summit. There will be no shortage of talent when this two teams meet and we expect it will be a game to remember and talk about.

Warri Wolves vs Nasarawa United
